棘背鳑鲏为鲤科鱼类，性情平和，需避开爱咬鳍的鱼，原生分布于中国各水系。繁殖依赖活体淡水河蚌，因此细沙底床与稳定水质比造景更重要。成体约 7.5–11 cm，群体越大状态越放松，适宜水温 18–25 °C。饲养不难，难在稳定。
Rhodeus spinalis, a member of the family Cyprinidae, comes from China, where it inhabits clear streams and rivers over gravel. Peaceful; males spar gently in breeding dress and omnivore with a taste for vegetable foods and small live fare, it grows to 7.5–11 cm and adapts well to a properly set-up aquarium in the 18–25 °C range.
