平头岭鳅为条鳅科鱼类，温和的底栖鱼，喜在细沙中翻掘，原生分布于中国广西洞穴水系。关灯后才是它的主场，细沙与缓沉饲料是关键。成体约 7.5–11 cm，小群 5 尾以上，单独饲养易胆怯，适宜水温 18–26 °C。细沙胜过一切造景。
Oreonectes platycephalus, a member of the family Nemacheilidae, comes from cave waters of Guangxi, China, where it inhabits hill-streams and riffles over pebbles. Peaceful bottom-dweller; burrows in fine sand and omnivorous bottom-feeder — sinking pellets, frozen foods, it grows to 7.5–11 cm and adapts well to a properly set-up aquarium in the 18–26 °C range. In a community tank it pairs well with Small calm cyprinids.
