小头赫氏鱼为鲤科鱼类，对同类温和，对小鱼不留情，原生分布于青藏高原水系。故乡的水来自融雪：凉爽、湍急、溶氧饱和。成体约 11.2–16.5 cm，幼鱼群游，成鱼成对或单养，适宜水温 18–26 °C。降温比喂食更重要。
Herzensteinia microcephalus, a member of the family Cyprinidae, comes from Tibetan Plateau waters, where it inhabits clear streams and rivers over gravel. Peaceful toward equals, merciless to fry and hearty feeder; alternate protein and vegetable meals, it grows to 11.2–16.5 cm and adapts well to a properly set-up aquarium in the 18–26 °C range. In a community tank it pairs well with Cold-water catfish of similar bulk.
