刘氏爬岩鳅为爬鳅科鱼类，温和，仅对喜欢的石头有领域性，原生分布于中国南方山溪。喜欢急流、凉爽、高溶氧的水环境，高温是最大的敌人。成体约 6–8.8 cm，建议一石一鱼，或 3 尾以上分散领域，适宜水温 18–26 °C。水流、溶氧和低温，三者缺一不可。
Beaufortia liui, a member of the family Balitoridae, comes from southern Chinese mountain streams, where it inhabits fast-flowing mountain streams, clinging to rocks. Peaceful; territorial only over a favourite stone and herbivorous grazer — aufwuchs, algae wafers, vegetable matter, it grows to 6–8.8 cm and adapts well to a properly set-up aquarium in the 18–26 °C range. Other Beaufortia species in our database include Beaufortia kweichowensis, Beaufortia leveretti, Beaufortia pingi.
