Salvelinus leucomaenis, a member of the family Salmonidae, comes from Japan, where it inhabits cold, highly oxygenated mountain streams. Territorial toward its own kind; predatory on small fish and carnivore; insects, crustaceans and small fish, it grows to 15–30 cm and adapts well to a properly set-up aquarium in the 8–18 °C range. In a community tank it pairs well with Similar-sized peaceful community fish.

イワナは夏の室内水槽で飼えますか？

クーラーなどで水温を18℃以下に維持できるなら可能です。夏の室温が高い部屋では水槽用クーラーの導入が事実上必須になります。水温管理こそが飼育成功の決め手です。

ヤマメとの混泳は可能ですか？

非推奨です。両者とも縄張り意識が強く、狭い水槽では争いが起こります。それぞれ単独で飼うのが最も美しく、安全に楽しめる方法です。

白い斑点（パーマーク）の役割は何ですか？

正確な機能は解明されていませんが、渓流の日影模様のような光の斑に紛れて敵から身を守る保護色と考えられています。環境が悪いと斑点が目立たなくなることがあり、美しさは水質の良さを映す指標にもなります。
