A Gobiidae species native to muddy coasts of SE China: Periophthalmus modestus lives bottom-dwelling over sand. Calm bottom resident with clear territory boundaries. Adults reach 11.5–16.8 cm. In a community tank it pairs well with Non-goby bottom fish.
