Frequently asked questions

Why is my panda loach losing its black-and-white colors?

Natural maturation. The dramatic panda pattern is a juvenile trait that fades as the fish grows. Adults show a softer, still attractive pattern — it is not a sign of illness.

Is it harder to keep than other hillstream loaches?

Slightly. It demands the same cool, flowing, oxygen-rich conditions but is less tolerant of water quality lapses. A mature, stable tank is more important than for hardier relatives.

Can I keep it with other loaches?

Yes — with other hillstream species in a spacious, well-fed setup. Competition for food is the main issue, so spot-feed to make sure the panda loach gets its share.

When does the panda pattern fade?

Usually between four and eight centimetres, over some months — a gradual marbling rather than an overnight change, ending in the handsome adult pattern.
