Green Jade Shrimp — a deep emerald-mint morph of Neocaridina davidi from late-2000s Taiwan lines. Reaches 2-2.5 cm, hardy at 18-26 °C, breeds freely in freshwater; glows against both moss and red plants.

Species overview

Green Jade Shrimp is the jade-green selection of Neocaridina davidi that emerged from Taiwanese breeding programs in the late 2000s, when breeders crossing yellow and wild-type lines noticed deep green sports and stabilized them into a true-breeding strain. Good green jades are a striking deep jade — almost emerald on the back, fading to a lighter mint on the underside — and unlike some color forms the green stays rich in adulthood. It is the same forgiving species underneath: 2-2.5 cm, comfortable at 18-26 °C across pH 6.5-8.0, unfussy about hardness, and constantly at work scraping algae from leaves, wood and glass. Green jade is among the best 'working' shrimp for a planted tank because its color reads beautifully against both green moss and red plants, and its transparent undertone gives it an almost metallic glow under good lighting. It breeds as easily as the red cherry — freshwater, no larval stage, monthly clutches — and tolerates the beginner mistakes that kill more delicate Caridina. Keep colors apart, avoid copper, and it will multiply for years.

Temperament, diet & tankmates

Schooling
Groups of 10 or more
Diet
Algae and biofilm grazer; color foods keep hues intense
Recommended tankmates
  • Other Neocaridina davidi morphs — Interbreed — single-color colonies only
  • Small tetras and rasboras — Safe for adults; moss shelters shrimplets
  • Otocinclus catfish — Peaceful, same water, same job
  • Freshwater snails — No conflict; shared cleanup role
Avoid keeping with
  • Copper-based medications — Lethal to all invertebrates
  • Large predatory fish — Will eat shrimp
  • Plant fertilizers with trace copper — Copper accumulates and harms colonies

Breeding & notes

Sexual dimorphism
Females are larger and deeper with a darker green saddle; males slimmer and paler mint.
Breeding method
Breeds readily in pure freshwater. Females carry 15-25 eggs for roughly three weeks; hatchlings are fully formed and graze biofilm immediately. Monthly clutches are the norm in a mature tank.
